Lincoln Doesn't Need to Be the Next Cambridge — It Needs to Be Lincoln

Every few months, someone suggests that Lincoln should try to become "the Cambridge of the North" or "the next Silicon Fen." I understand the ambition, but I think it misses the point.

Lincoln's strengths are not Cambridge's strengths. And that's a good thing.

What Lincoln does differently

Our economy is built on agriculture, food production, engineering, defence, and increasingly, digital technology. These are not second-tier industries — they are sectors where Lincolnshire has genuine national and international competitive advantage.

The real priorities

• Better rail connectivity to London and the East Midlands
• More affordable workspace for growing firms
• Stronger links between the university and local industry
• A housing strategy that attracts young professionals

Lincoln doesn't need a rebrand. It needs the confidence to be itself — and the infrastructure investment to match.
