Steep Hill: Britain's Favourite Street Gets a Makeover
Steep Hill has been many things — a medieval trading route, a Victorian commercial street, and in 2012, the winner of the Academy of Urbanism's Great Street Award. Now it's getting a sensitive makeover.
The £2.1 million improvement scheme, funded through the Cathedral Quarter masterplan, is replacing worn cobbles, adding heritage-style lighting, and installing discreet handrails to improve accessibility.
Preserving character
The work has been designed in close consultation with the 42 independent businesses that trade on the hill, with construction phased to minimise disruption.
