Three Lincoln parks achieve Green Flag Award

The Green Flag Award quality mark has been providing a benchmark for standards of green spaces for 30 years and the Lincoln area is now home to three parks that have all achieved the Green Flag Award.

Boultham Park, Hartsholme Country Park, and Lincoln Arboretum have all been successfully awarded Green Flag status with Boultham Park also being classed as a Green Heritage Site for its conservation of a site with historical significance.

The Green Flag Award is an international accreditation programme that recognises and rewards well managed parks and green spaces. Founded in 1996, today the Green Flag Award has been presented to more than 2,000 places in over 15 countries around the world.

The process to achieve a Green Flag Award requires a desktop study of how the park meets the requirements for park management, for safe and enjoyable spaces, how biodiversity is protected and encouraged and how the community are involved. If the park successfully passes this first process then a site assessment is carried out by the judges to see the management of the space in practice.

“Parks are essential public spaces that support our wellbeing, our communities and our economy. Yet for millions of people, particularly in the most deprived areas, local parks simply don’t feel safe or welcoming.

“With public services under pressure, investing in parks is not a luxury, it’s a practical, preventative solution and one of the most visible ways to improve people’s quality of life.

“City of Lincoln Council have shown what can be achieved when parks are properly supported and managed.
