Images, video and rights
Photography is usually what decides whether we can run something. This page is the one to forward to whoever makes your images.
Photographs
- JPEG, PNG or WebP. Send the original, not a resized copy.
- At least 1000px on the long edge. Below that we can still use an image, but not at full width.
- Landscape works everywhere. Portrait is welcome, and is the only orientation we use for days out.
- More than one is better than one. Three or four gives us something to choose from.
- No text, logos or watermarks burnt into the image.
- Tell us who took it, if a credit is expected, and give us a line of alt text describing what’s in it.
Video
- MP4, H.264. Please convert before sending.
- We can’t take
.movfiles or HEVC — they’ll be returned rather than converted. - A link to YouTube or Vimeo is fine as an alternative.
What you’re granting us
When you send us an image or a clip, you’re confirming you have the right to share it and to let us use it — including any people in it, and their permission where that’s needed. You’re granting us the right to publish it on the site, in our newsletters and on our social channels, alongside the story it came with.
You keep ownership. We’re not selling it on, licensing it to anyone else, or using it for advertising. If you need a credit, say so when you send it.
Embargoes
Mark the date and time clearly at the top of what you send. Our full position on embargoes is on the press portal.
